Most of the people in the Sub- Division live in the rural areas, and incomes are dependent mainly on old style cultivation. For people living in urban areas, the main occupations are Government Service, business, etc. Some of the people also practice piggery, poultry, dairy farming etc. to earn their livelihoods.
Agriculture - 80% of the inhabitants of the Sub-Division depend on agriculture for their livelihood. The main food crops are Rice and Maize, the other agriculture produce are ginger, turmeric, black pepper, areca nut etc.
Horticulture -The Sub-Division has a great produce of horticulture crops. The main Horticulture Crops are Orange, Pineapple, Banana, Lemon, Jack-fruits, Plums, Pear, Peach etc.
Minerals -Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division is very rich in minerals resources. The important minerals in the Sub-Division are Coal, Limestone & Uranium.
Transport -Roads are the only means of transportation in the Sub-Division. Most of the people live in rural areas and the Sub-Division is still backward in trade etc. due to transportation bottlenecks. Road Communication is the only means for the progress and economic prosperity of the Sub-Division. The Sub-Division is connected by two main link roads from the District Headquarter one is Nongstoin-Pariong Road and the other is Nongstoin-Mawthawpdah road. The Mawkyrwat-Shillong Road is the main road connecting this place to the Capital of the State. Borsora-Cherragoan is the International trade route.
Telephone Connectivity -The Sub-Division at present has both land lines and mobile telephone connectivity provided by both public and private service providers.
Language -The principal languages of the Sub-Division are Khasi and Garo, with English as the official language. Hajong and Bengali are also spoken in the border areas of the Sub- division where there is a sizeable Hajong and Bengali population.
